In this two day workshop being in a Negative space is not a bad thing! We will be discussing and working with negative space, an area of a painting that is so often over looked. What is negative space? It is that area around the image you are painting the background and spaces in between.

Negative space has so many possibilities from creating interesting and exciting darks to beautiful lost and found lines and even improving paintings that are almost done but need something more.Glendlough, Ireland

We will spend day one getting to understand negative space with a few exercises and prepping for paintings the next day.

I love teaching this technique, it can be a very effective tool if you are trying to loosen up and for taking your paintings to the next level. I am looking forward to exploring the balance between Negative and Positive space with you and I know you all will find something positive about negative space!

    Things you will need:

    • Paints (good quality, I use Daniel Smiths but Winsor Newton and Holbein are also good)
    • Paper cut into two (2) 9 x 12 and two (2) 11 x 14 (good quality, I use Arches 140#)
    • Brushes
    • Water container
    • Paper towels

I will provide reference photos of subject matter but if you would like to bring your own please print your reference photo out in a 9 x 12. Make your reference photo simple like a flower, animal or small still life. It is easier to study the technique if your subject is not too complicated.

    NMWS Spring 2020 Workshop with

    Brenda Swenson

    Negative Painting with Watercolor

Discover the exciting results of negative painting with watercolor! Negative painting is the technique of painting around a subject (the negative space) to define it in the composition. Build your confidence in handling glazes, wet into wet, under-paintings and painting into wet passages. Strengthen your understanding of pigments and how they directly relate to the complexed medium of watercolor. During the workshop you’ll learn how to create interesting shapes and depth of color with transparent glazes. Strengthen a painting with overlapping, interlocking shapes and linkage. Students will benefit from daily demonstrations, friendly critiques, and one on one help. Workshop Skill Level: Intermediate and beyond.

Workshop Details : A 4-day workshop, May 5-8 (Tue-Fri), held at the Fine Arts Gallery on EXPO-NM (State Fairgrounds) in Albuquerque, NM. Workshop hours will be 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with an hour break for lunch.
