    (in Person)

    with Steven Griggs

    Sept. 28, 29 30, Oct. 1, 2021

    Griggs Watercolor WORKSHOP

to take place (in person) on Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri .

    Watermedia Workshop Description

    Watercolor Painting Steve Griggs Style

Learn how to create loose, moving, and evocative watercolor paintings with free and generous brush strokes. During this workshop, beginner to advanced level painters are invited to try out a variety of watercolor painting strategies and techniques to create loose, intuitive, free, and spontaneous effects. You will learn about color mixing, glazes, composition, drying time, thickness, and lost and found edges, while painting short, warm-up sketches as well as finished landscape, cityscape, and/or waterscape paintings.

Each day the workshop sessions start with a demonstration painting, followed by a short instruction session, and then time for participants to work on their own paintings with individual attention and feedback. At the end of the painting session the group will gather for positive  and encouraging critique, typically filled with laughter and fun. After a lunch break, the afternoon sessions follow the same format.

This style of painting will move participants out of their comfort zone. There is sure to be a lot of laughter and camaraderie as participants encourage one another's efforts and discover the beauty that emerges as they develop their own loose painting voice.

The Workshop Coordinator is Mary Jane Milz - 505-261-7918.  Please call Mary Jane for questions.

Steve Griggs will be presenting a public painting demo on Monday evening, Sept. 27th at the Fine Arts Gallery on EXPO-NM, starting at 7PM. Fee is $10 cash at the door. Registered Workshops students admitted free of charge.

    Making a Splash with Watercolor
All Skill Levels - but there should be some prior familiarity with the medium

Randy HaleParticipants will discover a whole series of subjects in this exciting two-day watercolor workshop!  You may find yourself painting a diverse series of subjects ranging from landscapes to urban settings, water reflections, florals, or taking a fun whimsical approach to painting wonky critters! The objective behind each subject YOU paint will be to loosen up, have fun, but also embrace three crucial concepts:

    • mastering brushwork that includes “lost and found” edge treatments.
    • understanding how “light and shadow” create the perceptions of 3-dimensional depth and dimension.
    • the importance of value contrasts in creating paintings that “pop!”

Randy will do a demo each morning & afternoon, and bring color copy handouts with notes and photo references - participants will have these handouts to take home with them to refer to over and over later.

At the end of the first day, participants paintings will be lined up for sharing (with commentary by Randy) and at the conclusion of the second day, Randy will do a critique of each painter’s best piece.

This workshop is designed to help participants pick up important watercolor techniques and set a course to launch them toward becoming more confident painters.
