The Soledad Canyon Day Use Area is a junction of The Bar and Soledad Canyons. Lots of painting subjects are possible (rocks, interesting tree forms, a windmill, trail flora). There is even an easy trail if you want to venture up. I stopped about a third of the trail up and sat on a rock, and looking up, I watched two hawks flying around tall rocks. A great idea for a painting! The Soledad Canyon Day Use Area is about 10 miles east of Las Cruces. To get there, take University Ave. which turns into Dripping Springs Road, around A-Mountain. Then turn right on Soledad Canyon Road (at Talavera sign). Continue about 5 miles on Soledad Canyon Road until it deadends at the park & parking lot. There are many “set up” spots just off the parking lot. -- Nancy T.
