Theme is: “Rough and Tumble: Life in a Desert Town”. The desert can be a rough place: thorns, goat heads, scorpions, rattlesnakes, the blistering sun baking the land or tumbleweed blowing in fierce winds. For centuries people have lived and thrived here. This theme speaks to the human history of survival in this region, and the wonder of this place (and not only in delicate flowers emerging from a hostile land). We are thrilled by jagged peaks of rocks against a blue sky, carved out areas of mining-created “beauty”, or smooth river rocks in a dry riverbed, tumbled by flash floods and ice. Indoors or outdoors, life in a desert town can be rough and tumble and the artwork will inspire artists to respond creatively to this multi-faceted topic.
