Theme:  Five Thousand Years of Agriculture in New Mexico".

Somewhere around 5,000 years ago, indigenous people of the North American Southwest began to cultivate maize, an early version of what we know as corn today. Early maize was not much like the corn we know, but its cultivation enabled people who were essentially hunter-gatherers to remain in one area, allowing for the beginnings of what would later become the cultures of Ancestral Puebloans, Mogollon and Hohokam. Many changes in people, crops and practices have occurred in the last 5,000 years, but agriculture remains integral to culture and economy of the North American Southwest. Artists of the New Mexico Watercolor Society will draw on changes in Prehistoric, Historic and Contemporary agricultural practices and imagery to illustrate a beautiful timeline, supporting the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Museum’s mission to promote the arts while educating Museum visitors about aesthetics and diversity in the artwork of historic and contemporary New Mexico.

    “Watercolor Techniques"

    Marie Siegrist Mini Workshop Series

Cost: Members $100 total (includes all three classes) Limit: 10

Have you ever wondered what paper is best for your watercolor paintings? Come an experiment with some of the leading paper brands. See the difference in surface texture and see how they perform with a graduated wash.

Do you have control over your washes and glazes? Are you using the right brushes for your techniques? If you want to explore and improve your core techniques, then these classes are for you!!

Should you stretch your paper to overcome the effects of buckling? Come and explore what options you have to manage buckling during the painting process and the types of support boards available.

Each class will be designed around a core technique like washes and glazing. The class agenda will include demos, practice time with feedback and then opportunity to incorporate the new technique in an actual painting to be completed during the class. The core areas selected are based on known areas that challenge watercolorists to execute exhibition worthy paintings.

Marie Siegrist, NMWS, is a long time SC member and excellent teacher who has spent her life as an artist.
