Nan created this painting as part of a series
of portraits of useful native New Mexico plants . Young Rumex leaves are highly nutritious,
boiled and eaten as a 'spring green' by many pueblo peoples. The fleshy root, resembling a sweet potato, has antibacterial properties,
and dried powdered root was used to treat wounds. The older leaves are high in tannins, and the plant was used also in the tanning of
leather. Rumex is found in many parts of New Mexico, and is locally abundant in our mesas and grasslands, where early summer
displays are often spectacular.
This painting's size is a quarter watercolor sheet and is being offered matted and framed.
