Penny Duncklee, NMWS

Real learning began after my graduation from Duke University. I began to question: “I wonder what would happen if...?” Or, “I need to make our Christmas and birthday presents. I know how to sew men's, women's, and children's clothes, embroider, knit, cross-stitch, make copper enameled jewelry, and do macramé. I have been a potter creating and selling custom designed, high-fired, wheel thrown stoneware, using glazes I made myself. I fired the pots in a gas kiln that I built. I made pinch pots using clay that an Indian potter gave me, and fired them the way the Indians do, so they came out black. For sixty years, I have had cameras and for seventeen of them, a darkroom. I still do photography but now use my computer to print the images.

Since going on a trip twenty five years ago and painting my own postcards, I have been creating art with watercolors. I, too, have been in many shows and have many collectors. I have won some prizes, but still know there is more to know. Recently, I have put most of the other mediums on hold, except photography, to concentrate on learning as much as I can about the most wonderful medium of all, watercolor.

I am exploring the world and life, painting the beauty of the niches and vistas I see at every step. Color and the way light plays with it makes me stop to look. I paint what I feel and usually paint in a realistic style. The flowers will fade; the clouds will evaporate, but, I will have painted the beauty before the moments pass.

My website lists galleries, shows, many paintings and a few more words about me. Perhaps I painted one of my works for you. Enjoy. Penny

"Who Dropped The Teabags?", watercolor 10.5 x 14.5".
For a show focusing on the theme of "tea" I made portraits of two teapots I made when I was a potter. The little one is of copper enamel, but wishes it were a big clay one like the others. I tell it that it is beautiful even though tiny and different.

"Life Wants to Live", watercolor 8 x 10".
This amazing sight of life sprouting from the dried mud field behind a new gallery blew my mind away with the miracle of returning life struggling to be.

"Watching", watercolor 14 x 21".
Hopefully, this speaks for itself as a possible view of southern New Mexico.

"Mirrored Pear and Apple", watercolor 7.5 x 9.5".
After a show themed about mirrors, in which I had a painting of a mountain reflected in a lake, I had fun practicing painting mirrored objects. Here is one.
