The New Mexico Watercolor Society (NMWS) was developed after research and planning by Peter Walker. Feeling a real need for this kind of organization, he publicized the initial meeting in the Albuquerque Journal, inviting watercolorists and people interested in watercolor to attend the meeting. His insight and hard work were rewarded with a large turnout.

NMWS was founded May 2, 1969, as a statewide chapter of the Southwestern Watercolor Society of Dallas, Texas. In January 1975, the NMWS became an independent entity. The Southern Chapter of the Society (NMWS-SC), located in Las Cruces and serving all of the state’s southern counties, was formed in the fall of 2001.

The purpose of the Society is the elevation of the stature of watercolor as an art medium and the education of the public as to the significance of watercolor as an important creative permanent painting medium. The ultimate goal is to make New Mexico known nationally for its watercolorists.

Signature status is attained when a member has been accepted in five NMWS juried shows. The intials "NMWS" may be used with his or her signature.

What we do:

Meetings are held monthly and include interesting and stimulating painting-related programs. There is a social preceding the meeting where artists can share and get to know other society members.

NMWS members have the opportunity to participate in the annual exhibits sponsored by the society, educational workshopsconducted by nationally known artists, and enjoy the fellowship of other artists during the monthly Paint Out sponsored by the society. NMWS members are also eligible to enter the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies’ annual show where watercolor artists from societies throughout the southwestern states are represented. Non-juried exhibits are scheduled throughout the year at various alternate space venues for members to exhibit their work, also.
